The Last of Us - HBO adaptation chooses Chernobyl as producer

The series of The Last of Us for HBO will feature another artist who participated in the creation of Chernobyl, also shown by the broadcaster. Johan Renck, who produced five episodes about the series of events in Ukraine, will also be the director of the pilot episode of The Last of Us.

Renck announced the job in an interview for the Discussing Film website. He was invited to do the first episode, and there are negotiations to continue in other appearances. However, this is not yet defined.
Renck is not the only member of the Chernobyl team to participate in the production of The Last of Us. The series is led by Craig Mazin, writer and creator of Chernobyl. In The Last of Us, Mazin is described as a director and writer, alongside Neil Drickmann, writer for Naughty Dog and responsible for the game.

The plot of Chernobyl and The Last of Us have features in common. While the HBO series deals with the consequences of the nuclear accident in Ukraine, Naughty Dog’s game tells the story of a dystopia in a devastated civilization. In other words, both bring a climate of desolation and survival.

The series will address the events of the first title in the series, released for PlayStation 3 in 2013. The plot takes place 20 years after civilization was devastated, with people now living in quarantines. The main character is Joel, who needs to survive, crossing the United States with Ellie, a 14-year-old girl. However, according to Mazin, it is possible that The Las of Us Part II events will also appear on TV. The new game will be released on June 19.
