After being selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the sixth pick of the 2012 draft, Damian Lillard was named the best rookie in the NBA.
In his debut, on October 31, 2012, against the Los Angeles Lakers, the point guard scored 23 points and provided 11 assists. Thus, he joined Oscar Robertson and Allen Iverson as one of only three players to score at least 20 points and 10 assists in his NBA debut.
In addition, the 11 assists were the highest mark in this regard since Jason Kidd in 1994, also with 11.
By the end of its first season, Lillard had hit several impressive milestones:
- fourth player to be unanimously named the league’s best rookie;
- third rookie to reach 1,500 points and 500 assists for the season;

In their first Western decision since 2000, the Portland Trail Blazers could not withstand the strength of the Golden State Warriors and lost the series in four games.

In the 2019/2020 season, in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, the NBA overhauled its dispute format. All 22 teams that still had a chance of reaching the playoffs were isolated at the Disney complex in Florida for their final eight games.
